Friday, December 17, SFFILM presented its SF Honors Award for achievement in filmmaking to Award-winning Director Joe Wright’s Cyrano, the 124-year old drama reimagined as a musical by Screenwriter Erica Schmidt, starring Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. The film screened to a live audience, in partnership with UAR and MGM, at San Francisco’s famed Roxie Theater. The SF Honors Award was presented to the filmmakers and cast virtually ahead of their participation in live post-screening Q&A.

“We’re thrilled to present the SF Honors Award for Achievement in Filmmaking to Cyrano, a dazzling reimagining of a timeless tale, and to recognize director Joe Wright's foray into a very different type of storytelling,” said Anne Lai, SFFILM Executive Director. “We value the opportunity to celebrate and share this bold film with our San Francisco community,” said Lai.

Award-winning director Joe Wright’s Cyrano envelops moviegoers in a symphony of emotions with music, romance, and beauty, re-imagining the timeless tale of a heartbreaking love triangle. A man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac (played by Peter Dinklage) dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne (Haley Bennett), Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her—and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.). The film will release in New York and Los Angeles on January 21 with a wide release on February 4.

SF Honors is an award and tribute presented by SFFILM and made possible by support from SFFILM Board Member Todd Traina and philanthropist Diane B. Wilsey. This series is designed to showcase and honor the fresh and bold talent behind the year’s most compelling films. In 2017, SFFILM honored Joe Wright’s Darkest Hour, with Wright, lead actor (and eventual Academy Award-winner) Gary Oldman, co-star Ben Mendelsohn, writer/producer Anthony McCarten, and supervising sound editor Craig Berkey taking the stage to discuss their critical and popular hit film.
