Kaufman Astoria Studios Kaufman Arts District celebrated The Sparrow Film Project short film festival with Gala and Awards Ceremony on 12/6 at Museum of the Moving Image

THE SPARROW FILM PROJECT, Kaufman Astoria Studios and The Kaufman Arts District are proud to announce the winners of The Sparrow Film Project 2018. The announcement was made by Founder and Chief Creative Officer Evangelos Roumeliotis, Artistic Director Michael Freeland and Technical Director Sal Milazzo of The Sparrow Film Project

The winners were announced at The Sparrow Film Project 2018 Gala and Awards Ceremony, held on Thursday Dec 6^th at Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria Queens. The awards were presented by Adam Bagy, the gala and awards ceremony were produced by Sal Milazzo and Michael Freeland. Additionally, the winner of the Best Use of Score category was announced by Lea Wülferth of YouTooCanWoo.

Based in Queens and international in scope, the Sparrow Film Project is an annual competition that challenges filmmakers to make three-minute films in three weeks. For each round, filmmakers are guided by a different set of criteria based on a new theme, and each team draws a unique assignment from a hat.

The Sparrow Film Project 10^th year anniversary theme is Sound and Vision, and centers around perspective and inspiration.  What is art?  What makes art, art?  What does art mean to the individual and how does it uniquely affect each one of us? For the first portion of the assignment, each team was randomly assigned a work of art (painting, sculpture, photograph, etc.). Each art piece is meant to be interpreted and inspire the story of the film. This year, we challenge the filmmaking teams to create a 3-minute film juxtaposing two mediums, to explore how sound and vision inform their creation.

Starting with this year's 10th anniversary, The Sparrow Film Project is being presented under the Kaufman Arts District. The Sparrow Film Project is made possible with major sponsorship from Kaufman Astoria Studios and is presented in partnership with the Kaufman Arts District (KAD), which creates, supports and presents public arts installations and events in the Astoria community  The Sparrow Film Project will culminate with an awards ceremony and gala on Thursday, December 6th at the Museum of the Moving Image, a co-founder of the KAD with Kaufman Astoria Studios and Queens Council on the Arts.

The SPARROW FILM PROJECT 2018 afterparty was held at the renowned gastropub, The Bonnie, in Astoria, Queens.

The SPARROW FILM PROJECT is an annual short-film competition that challenges first-time and established filmmakers to create three-minute films in three weeks. For each edition, filmmakers are guided by a unique set of criteria based on a new theme, and each team draws a random assignment from a hat. Since its’ inception, The Sparrow Film Project has championed films that display a high-degree of craft and ingenuity, while imbued with wonder and whimsy.

THE SPARROW FILM PROJECT was initially conceived in 2008 by Founder and Chief Creative Officer Evangelos Roumeliotis, an artist and entrepreneur with deep roots in the Astoria, Queens community. In its’ humble beginnings, a theme would be drawn from a hat, and filmmakers were tasked with creating a three-minute film, with awards ceremonies held every three months. Shorts were screened and nominees were handed awards at the Sparrow Tavern and later, another local bar, Hell Gate Social. The Sparrow Film Project was started in 2008, in over 5 years, SFP has grown to over 500 submissions, highlighting provocative, experimental, groundbreaking films, both local and international in scope.
