3rd International Film Festival & Awards‧Macao winners of Competition and New Chinese Cinema unveiled

The Awards Ceremony of the 3rd International Film Festival & Awards.Macao (IFFAM) was staged at the Macao Cultural Centre tonight gathering around 800 guests including internationally-acclaimed film directors, film stars and industry professionals from around the world. The Film Festival screened 54 spectacular films this year, including 11 films competing for nine awards in the Competition section as well as six film entries of the New Chinese Cinema section for the Best New Chinese-language Film of the Year. All winners were revealed at the Awards Ceremony tonight.

 

Winners of Competition unveiled

 

The Competition section once again shone a spotlight on first and second-time feature film directors, with 11 films vying for nine accolades awarded by the jury and the Macao Audience Choice Award, voted for by local audiences.

 

The 11 Competition films are “School's Out”, “The Guilty”, “Clean up”, “The Good Girls”, “Ága”, “Scarborough”, “Suburban Birds”, “White Blood”, “All Good”, “Jesus” and “The Man Who Feels No Pain”.

 

Best Film: “Clean up” (presented by IFFAM Jury President Chen Kaige)

Jury Prize: “White Blood” (presented by IFFAM Jury member Danis Tanović and Artistic Director of IFFAM, Mike Goodridge)

Best Director: Gustav Möller, “The Guilty” (presented by Jury member for Local View Power, Phillip Noyce and IFFAM Ambassador Shekhar Kapur)

Best Actor Award: Jakob Cedergren, “The Guilty” (presented by IFFAM Jury member Tillotama Shome)

Best Actress Award: Aenne Schwarz, “All Good” (presented by Talent Ambassador Aaron Kwok)

Award for Best Technical Contribution: Kaloyan Bozhilov, cinematographer of “Ága” (presented by leading actor and actress of “Aruna & Her Palate”, Oka Antara and Dian Sastrowardoyo)

Award for Best Screenplay: Barnaby Southcombe, screenwriter of “Scarborough” (presented by IFFAM Ambassador Xue Xiao Lu)

Award for Best New Young Actor: Abhimanyu Dassani, “The Man Who Feels No Pain” (presented by IFFAM Jury member Mabel Cheung and film director Cheang Pou Soi)

Special Mention: “Jesus” (presented by IFFAM Jury member Paul Currie)

Macao Audience Choice Award: “The Good Girls” (presented by Director of Galaxy Entertainment Group, Philip Cheng, Vice President of Communication and Content Marketing of Sands China Ltd., Jeffrey Jiang, and Senior Vice President of Business Development of MGM, Brian Fiddis)

 

“New Chinese Cinema” boosts the lineup of films

 

The line-up for the new competition section New Chinese Cinema was “Dear Ex”, “Baby”, “Xiao Mei”, “Up the Mountain”, “Fly by Night” and “The Pluto Moment”. “Up the Mountain” took home the Best New Chinese-language  Film of the Year. The award was presented by jury members for New Chinese Cinema Stephanie Bunbury, Nick James and Shu Kei.

 

Present at the Awards Ceremony were Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, Alexis Tam; Spouse of Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region, Winnie Fok; Director of Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) and President of the IFFAM Organizing Committee, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes; the two Executive Vice Presidents of the IFFAM Organizing Committee, namely, President of Macau Films & Television Productions and Culture Association (MFTPA), Alvin Chau, and President of Cultural Affairs Bureau, Mok Ian Ian; IFFAM Ambassadors Shekhar Kapur and Xue Xiao Lu; Talent Ambassador Aaron Kwok; Jury President of IFFAM, Chen Kaige; Jury members of IFFAM, Mabel Cheung, Danis Tanović, Tillotama Shome, and Paul Currie; Artistic Director of IFFAM, Mike Goodridge; Director of El Gouna Film Festival, Intishal Al Timimi; Director of Sydney Film Festival, Nashen Moodley; Artistic Director of Chicago International Film Festival, Mimi Plauché, and Creative Director of Mumbai International Film Festival, Smriti Kiran, along with many of the competition filmmakers and other guests. Famed Hong Kong hosts Bob Lam and Astrid Chan were the hosts of the evening.

 

MGTO Director and President of the 3rd IFFAM Organizing Committee, Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, remarked in her address at the Awards Ceremony, “The week-long Film Festival has taken audiences on a visual journey across 54 extraordinary feature films and 14 local short films. In the IFFAM Industry Hub, the Project Market has cast the spotlight on 14 much-anticipated new film projects. Among them, two Macao projects were named winners of the Best Project Award and the Macao Spirit Award. Meanwhile, 400 individual Project Meetings have aligned production teams with investors in face-to-face dialogues, while the new Work-in-Progress Presentations have opened windows for filmmakers in search of partnership opportunities for projects close to completion. We are eager to see the Film Festival bring bright opportunities for filmmakers in Macao and from around the world.”

 

IFFAM Ambassadors Shekhar Kapur and Xue Xiao Lu as well as Talent Ambassador Aaron Kwok were presented tokens of appreciation at the Awards Ceremony.

 

Besides the above awards, an array of other accolades was presented at the Awards Ceremony to commend outstanding films and filmmakers for their achievements. Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government, Alexis Tam, presented the “Spirit of Cinema” Achievement Award to film director Chen Kaige. Internationally-acclaimed film director and Jury President of the 3rd IFFAM, Chen Kaige, directed his first film “Yellow Earth” in 1984, which garnered a number of awards and ushered in the new era for Chinese cinema. Recognized as one of the Chinese film classics, his acclaimed masterpiece “Farewell My Concubine” (1993) won the Palme d'Or at the 46th Cannes Film Festival in the same year, making Chen the only Chinese director who has received this top accolade to this day.

 

In addition, the NETPAC Award went to “Suburban Birds” (presented by Mimi Plauché, Sunny Joseph and Marco Martins, jury members from the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC)). The Asian Blockbuster Film 2018 went to the film “Crazy Rich Asians” (presented by Executive Vice President and Chief Officer, Human Resources and Corporate Social Responsibility of Melco Resorts & Entertainment Limited, Akiko Takahashi; Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Wynn Macau, Limited, Linda Chen; and Senior Vice President, Corporate & Community Relations of Suncity Group, Gina Lei). The Variety Asian Star: Up Next Award went to five actors and actresses as follows: Anne Curtis, Iqbaal Ramadhan, Zaira Wasim, Xana Tang and Ryan Zheng Kai (presented by Asia Editor of Variety Magazine, Patrick Frater, and Head of Festival Management of IFFAM, Lorna Tee)

 

This year, 14 film entries of Local View Power were divided for three public screening sessions during IFFAM. In the prize-giving ceremony held yesterday, “The Melancholy of Gods” by Lei Cheok Mei was presented with the Jury Prize for Best Film while “Halfway” by Ng Ka Lon received the Special Mention.

 

The Film Festival was held for a week from 8th to 14th December. The Organizing Committee continues to vigorously forges IFFAM into a prestigious brand in the international film industry as well as an East and West cultural exchange platform across borders and generations, while looking forward to joining worldwide professionals in reaching new milestones of the international film industry.
