Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

The second edition of the EU Film Festival in China: already a success!

About 40 screenings already took place at the Brodway Cinematheque Moma, the French Cultural Center (Centre Culturel Français), the Ullens Center of Contemporary Art (UCCA), the Cervantes Institute (Instituto Cervantes), the Italian Institute of Culture (Istituto Italiano di Cultura) and the Cinema of the Polish Embassy.

The audience is at 90% Chinese, and all age and social categories are represented. Most of them do not understand the language spoken in the film. There are always more than 100 persons watching the film at each screening even though the screening rooms of the Cervantes Institute and French Cultural Center only have 81 and 90 seats. People are thus seating on the stairs and on the floor.

People are queuing up more than one hour in advance to be sure to have a seat since the entrance is free and on a first come first seated basis.

Sometimes the room is so full that we have to organize additional screening following the scheduled one, or screen the film outside on a TV screen for those who cannot not wait for the second screening. People who cannot enter the screening room are always eager to see the film on the TV even if there is no Chinese subtitles, only English subtitles.

Before each screening we ask a few questions in Chinese about the country of the film screened and give small presents such as EU magnet, EU countries promotional leaflets, film posters and so on. After a few days, the audience was expecting the quizz and could answer questions such at the year of the first Olympiad, how many time did Ireland won the Nobel prize for literature (she even knew their names), or the city where croissants where invented.

Ambassadors or Embassy representatives even come to some of the screenings to present their film.

The screenings in Chengdu of the films from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Netherlands, Slovakia and Sweden are also drawing the public to the Stellar Yingdu Multiplex.
