Party, party

Most glamorous party of the LFF so far followed Monday's screening of I Shot Andy Warhol. Joining director Mary Harron and stars Lili Taylor and Jared (son of Richard) Harris, a moustachioed Harvey Keitel made a surprise appearance.

Harron told Moving Pictures that, despite the film telling the story of Valerie Solanas, she received assistance from many of Warhol's old cronies. 'The Warhol Foundation were fantastically helpful. I was nervous about approaching them... to say you want to make a film about the woman who tried to shoot the artist who is the centre of your whole foundation seems a very offensive request in some ways.' The Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh was also supportive. John Cale, who knew Warhol well from his Velvet Underground days, agreed to write the score. Only Lou Reed balked at the project. Harron wrote to him explaining that the film was not an attack on Warhol, but never received a reply.

Harron admits that making her debut feature was a daunting experience. 'It was totally scary. I was used to very small crews. Suddenly I was on set with 30 people. I never knew when I was supposed to say 'action!' Then the other thing was not being able to figure out what everyone does. It takes a week to work out what all those people are wandering about doing.' Geoffrey Macnab
