Rarely have more in-your-face blow jobs and murders gone into the first ten minutes of a serious picture than in Agustin Diaz Yanes' noisy, fast-paced directing debut, Nadie hablara de nosotras cuando hayamos muerto (Nobody Will Talk About Us When We're Dead).
Abril plays a prostitute who witnesses the murder of a policeman who has infiltrated a gangster ring. On to this thriller-ish skeleton Diaz Yanes grafts a moralistic analysis of the hardships of being impoverished, poorly-educated and female in 1990s Spain.
It looks like early 70s Scorsese: Victoria Abril even chats insanely to herself for a few moments like De Niro in Taxi Driver. "There are easier films to watch than this one," Diaz Yanes points out. "But I'd like people to be moved and excited, and to think a little about the state of Spain. I have tried to make a film for people to reflect on." Jonathan Holland
