Based on a novel by Carol Shields, Swann, the directorial debut of Anna Benson Gyles, stars Miranda Richardson (Damage) as best-selling author Sarah Maloney. She is trying to unravel the secrets of Mary Swann, an obscure poet from rural Ontario found axed to death on her husband's farm.
Brenda Fricker (My Left Foot ) plays librarian Rose Hindmarch, who was Swann's only friend and the last person to see her alive. The two characters reluctantly join forces so that Maloney can finish her book and Hindmarch can stop academics from trying to profit from the poet's grisly death.
Filmed in rural Ontario, the picture was jointly produced by Canada's Shaftesbury films and UK's Greenpoint films. Shaftesbury's Christina Jennings sees such alliances as the way forward: 'Working with co-production partners allows one to tap resources that one otherwise wouldn't be able to do, and therefore tackle larger projects.' Ann Marie Corvin
