Jevon O'Neill's directorial debut, Bob's Weekend, tells the story of Bob (Bruce Jones), who travels to Blackpool looking to end his life. He has been sacked by his tyrannical boss (Brian Glover) and his wife (Anna Jaskolka) is having an affair.
But Blackpool (also the setting of recent Britpics Funny Bones and Bhaji on the Beach) turns out to be full of surprises. A series of unlikely encounters ensue, which owe as much to Kafka as to Capra, and Bob discovers new hope.
O'Neill has managed to gather together a cast of well-known faces, led by Jones, the hero of Ken Loach's Raining Stones. While Bob's Weekend borders on the surreal, not a quality normally associated with Loach, it shares with that great director a desire to find redemption (and humour) amid despair. Nick Thomas
