Eastern Neighbours Film Festival is back!

emENFF2014lang.png

06 - 12 November - Filmhuis Den Haag
13 - 15 November - Het Nutshuis
The Hague, The Netherlands

After intense work, a programme of 38 features, shorts and documentary films - mainly Dutch premieres – is ready to be presented during the 6th edition of Eastern Neighbours Film Festival (ENFF). The festival is made possible by: Filmhuis Den Haag, Het Nutshuis, City of The Hague, Dutch Film Fund, Fund 21, Fund 1818 and the Prince Bernhard Culture Fund. Get to know the life and culture of our Eastern and South-eastern neighbours through recent, exciting and confrontational films from countries not yet members of the big EU family.

ACCLAIMED FILM PROGRAMME
ENFF tries to challenge the audience with funny, ironic, cynical, political-critical stories from Eastern and South-eastern Europe. Acclaimed feature films such as „COWBOYS” by Tomislav Mrsic (Croatia), „BARARIANS” by Ivan Ikic (Serbia), „SEABURNERS” by Melissa Onel (Turkey), „KEEP SMILING” by Rusudan Chkonia (Georgia) and „GOODBYE MOM” by Svetlana Proskurina (Russia) adorn the canvases of the Filmhuis. In addition there are four special programmes presenting shorts and documentaries: 25 YEARS AFTER THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL, FORBIDDEN FILM, WELCOME CROATIA and the recently added NEW TALETNS, NEW DISCOVERIES. ENFF also brings „HAPPILY EVER AFTER” to The Hague, which recently won a Golden Calf at the Netherlands Film Festival. The programme is compiled by Rada Sesic, film programmer for the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Sarajevo Film Festival, IDFA and several other European film festivals.

FOCUS
This year the focus is on the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, in a fascinating special film programme featuring recent documentaries from East and Southeast Europe that inspire social change through storytelling. This vibrant film programme will close with a debate that encourages the increasingly active conversation between filmmakers and various experts, about the sate of Europe today. Prominent guests, who have been central to the exciting development of film culture in the region, will hold master classes, introduce films and answer questions during the festival week.

FORBIDDEN FILM
Arts and films, in particular, are messengers of social change and there were times when they faced censorship and bans. The restoration of democracy gave a new life to many of these banned films. In 2014, ENFF brings back „EARLY WORKS” by Zelimir ZIlnik (Yugoslavia) from 1969. At the time the film was put aside in Yugoslavia, accused of offending public morals and negatively influencing the youth. Interestingly enough, the film is as relevant today as it was nearly half century ago. It tackles the rebelliousness of a certain time with its youth ideals, questioning whether the progressive heroes of today easily become the conformists of tomorrow.
Zelimir Zilnik is one of the most productive and prolific film-makers of Eastern Europe. A director, who never stops creating regardless of available budget. An auteur, who shares relevant stories with the world, either in his compelling documentaries, fiction or witty hybrid forms. Above all, Zilnik has been and still is a true source of inspiration for many young directors. Zilnik is a guest of the festival and he will introduce and debate his film.

WELCOME CROATIA
On 1st of July 2013, Croatia became a member of European Union, 22 years after its independence from former Yugoslavia. In recent years, Croatian films became more and more visible at film festivals, acknowledged by international audience and film critics.

NEW TALETNS, NEW DISCOVERIES
ENFF has a new programme, presenting new tough provoking short films by young directors from non-EU Europe.

PAN EUROPEAN SCREENING
25 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the new film „1989” by Oscar-nominated Danish director Anders Ostergaard and Erzsebet Racz will hold its world premiere. This high-politics drama about the collapse of the Iron Curtain will be screened simultaneously in more than 15 cities all over Europe. ENFF will co-host one of the screenings in The Hague on November 5th. This unique world premiere is hosted and presented by CPH:DOX and Magic Hour Films.
