Under the banner “Looking Back, Looking Forward: 20 Years of the New York African Film Festival,” our 2013 edition is dedicated to commemorating half a century of African cinema and two decades of work introducing American audiences to the best of this cinema.

This year, NYAFF is paying homage to Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène, the ‘father of African cinema,’ and to the first generation of African filmmakers, while passing the baton to a new group of storytellers who continue to challenge our understanding of the Continent.

TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE

At the age of eight years, Toussaint Louverture sees his father, an old slave, thrown into the harbor, judged unproductive. This marked the young Louverture forever. As an adult, having been freed, he led the slave revolt that leads to the independence of Haiti.

Sembène's legend remains that of a man politically involved and strongly committed. But one seldom refers to his private life, an image Sembène himself cherished. This film portrays

Sembène at his most candid, as well as his take on the women in his film Guelwaar.

GUELWAAR

Guelwaar is a trenchant comic portrait of contemporary Africa by the great Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembène. The story revolves around the mysterious death and even more

mysterious disappearance after death of one Pierre Henri Thioune (called Guelwaar, the Noble One), a political activist, philandering patriarch, and pillar of the local Christian community.

For 20 years, the hunger crisis in Mali seemed to be under control. But by 2008, prices had increased, and the African continent had become a playground for foreign investors. This investigative documentary focuses on Sosumar, a huge project that has the Malian government collaborating with a large group of foreign investors.

FUELLING POVERTY (US PREMIERE)

Ishaya Bako, Nigeria, 2012, 28min.

An artistic depiction of the failings of fuel subsidy management in Nigeria, Fuelling Poverty graphically captures the various contours of the fuel subsidy debate and offers a rallying cry for

change in Nigeria by the occupy Nigeria movement.

ALASKALAND

Chinonye Chukwu, Nigeria/USA, 2012, 75min. In this gorgeous, knowing debut film, Chukwuma, an Alaska-raised Nigerian struggling to balance his cultural heritage, reconnects with his younger sister Chidinma after a two year estrangement.

DOLCE VITA AFRICANA (US PREMIERE)

Cosima Spender, Mali/UK, 2008, 63min.

A documentary about internationally renowned Malian photographer Malick Sidibe, whose iconic images of his country from the late 1950s through to the 70s captured the carefree spirit of his generation asserting their freedom after

independence – until an Islamic coup ushered in years of military dictatorship.

NAIROBI HALF LIFE (NY PREMIERE)

David Tosh Gitonga, Kenya, 2012, 96min.

Mwas is a young aspiring actor, who moves from

his home village to Nairobi to make it big. But as

he moves towards his dream of taking center

stage, he finds himself drawn into a world of

small time crooks and deceit.
