« Pierre Angénieux Excellens in Cinematography » Tribute to ROGER A. DEAKINSMay 22nd 2015 - Palais des Festivals / Bunuel theater Thales Angénieux, as Cannes Film Festival Official Partner since 2013, makes a tribute every year to a prominent international director of photography. After Philippe Rousselot (AFC, ASC) in 2013, Vilmos Zsigmond (HSC, ASC) in 2014, Angénieux is honoring this year the English Director of Photography Roger A. Deakins, who has worked closely with the Coen brothers. Roger A. Deakins : a prolific DoP Deakins was born in Torquay, Devon, England, attended art college and the National Film School, and began his career by working in the medium of still photography. Many of his first cinematographic projects were documentaries, often shooting in Africa. He also covered the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, which required him to work for more than nine months as a crew member while filming and directing the documentary. He then moved on to feature film cinematography, starting in England and later in the United States. He has worked with many different directors such as the Coen brothers, Martin Scorsese, M. Night Shyamalan, Sam Mendès and Denis Villeneuve. He has also served as visual consultant for several animated features, including “WALL•E,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Rango,” “The Guardians”, “The Croods,” and most recently, “How to Train Your Dragon 2.” … and multi-awarded Roger A. Deakins is a twelve-time Academy Award nominee for Best Cinematography, for his work on Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Fargo,” “The Man Who Wasn’t There,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?,” “No Country for Old Men” and “True Grit”; Frank Darabont’s “The Shawshank Redemption”; Martin Scorsese’s “Kundun”; Andrew Dominik’s “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”; Stephen Daldry’s “The Reader,” which he shared with Chris Menges; Sam Mendes’ “Skyfall”; Denis Villeneuve’s “Prisoners” and most recently Angelina Jolie’s “Unbroken”. Deakins has been nominated thirteen times (for the twelve features listed above as well as on Sam Mendes “Revolutionary Road”) for the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award and won three, for “Shawshank Redemption,” “The Man who Wasn’t There” and “Skyfall.” He also received the ASC’s Lifetime Achievement award in 2011. Nominated seven times for the BAFTA Award, Deakins has won three: for “The Man Who Wasn’t There,” “No Country for Old Men” and “True Grit.” His work has also garnered him with eight nominations for the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) Best Cinematography Award, with five wins, and two Independent Spirit Awards. In 2008, he received the National Board of Review’s Career Achievement Award, and in 2013, Her Majesty the Queen Elisabeth II made him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), the only cinematographer to have been given this high honor.
