World Premiere at Berlinale: Jules Herrmann's LIEBMANN in Perspektive Deutsches KinoThe feature film LIEBMANN by female director Jules Herrmann will celebrate its world premiere in the section Perspektive Deutsches Kino of the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival. The Berlin-based director Jules Herrmann has realized her feature debut LIEBMANN in French language as a creative adventure and has found a truly unique way of visual storytelling. To leave the ghosts of the past behind, Antek Liebmann travels to the light-flooded northern part of France, where he eventually must find a way of confronting his nightmares.
LIEBMANN is Jules Herrmann's second appearance at Berlinale, her diploma film “Time Out” was co-produced with RBB and shown at Perspektive Deutsches Kino in 2006. It also competed in the film festival Max Ophüls Prize and won the Grand Prix of Oskariada in Warsaw. In 2013 she worked as an artistic consultant on “Art Girls” by Robert Bramkamp. Herrmann served as co-producer, artistic consultant and editor on the feature film “The Story of the Astronaut”, which won several awards and was the directorial debut of Godehard Giese, the main actor of LIEBMANN.
LIEBMANN features an excellent international cast. Alongside the French actress Adeline Moreau, who has worked with Michel Gondry and Pierre Salvadori, and the French actor Fabien Ara, the renowned German film and television actor Godehard Giese delivers an intense performance as the troubled character Liebmann. Among many others, Giese's acting credits include “Summers Downstairs” by Tom Sommerlatte, which opened Berlinale's Perspektive in 2015.

Synopsis: Teacher Antek Liebmann leaves his life in Germany behind and rents a place in summery northern France. He learns from his landlord that a murderer is striking terror in the surrounding woods. Following a dark premonition, Antek is drawn into the undergrowth on one of his walks where he makes a dangerous discovery. He befriends his attractive neighbour Geneviève and the cheery Sébastien. No one realises that Antek has left behind a terrible secret in his own country. Only the discovery of a mysterious property, to which Geneviève takes him, and the possibility of a new romantic relationship present Antek with a way out of the darkness. But before he can begin a new life, he must confront the ghosts of his past, conjure them up and exorcise them. The storytelling is like the feathers of a peacock, oscillating between unobtrusive glimmering and striking iridescence. And so, gentle summer days slide into night-time terrors or vanish in short flights of fancy into parallel worlds.
