Berlinale Spotlight: Short Film Presentations in India, Malaysia and the Philippines

For years the Berlinale has had a global presence with specially curated programmes at film festivals or other cultural events around the world. These activities take place under the name Berlinale Spotlight. In November and December, the Berlinale Spotlight will be presenting short film programmes in Asia.

With the support of the Goethe-Institutes in Hanoi, Kolkata, Kuala Lumpur and the Philippines, as well other local partners, a total of 27 films from the Berlinale Shorts section and the Berlinale’s Generation and Forum Expanded sections will be shown in Malaysia, India and the Philippines. The screenings in Southeast Asia are being coordinated by the Goethe-Institut in Hanoi. In October the films were already shown in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. This past summer Maike Mia Höhne, the curator of Berlinale Shorts, also presented a programme of short films at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival in India.

Alongside Na Young-kil’s HOSANNA, winner of the Golden Bear for Best Short Film 2015, and Joanna Arnow’s Bad at Dancing, winner of the Silver Bear Jury Prize (Short Film) 2015, the Berlinale Spotlight will be showing other films from this year’s Berlinale Shorts competition in Asia. In addition, it will showcase a number of groundbreaking short films from previous years, including Réka Bucsi’s Symphony no. 42 and David OReilly’s RGB XYZ.
